PHYSHICAL GEOGRAPHY LABORATORY
Head: Dr. Sorin Geacu GROUP OF GEOMOPHOLOGY AND NATURAL HAZARDS
Focus:
Complex knowledge of regional geomorphology, of the types of relief (fluvial, glacial, karst, etc.) and its dynamics;Geomorphic mapping – general and detailed maps on various scales;
Morphodynamic studies – the evolution of slopes and channels and the effects of neotectonic movements;
Investigation of natural hazards with special reference to landslides, erosion processes, and earthquake-triggered geomorphic processes.

Focus:
Identification, mapping and characterisation (by means of quantitative and qualitative indexes) of the territorial units’ elementary and complex topoclimates;Topoclimatic profiles, instrumental and visual observations of topoclimatic profiles in various local/time conditions and on different levels;
The results are correlated with the regime of major climatic elements, marked out on various-scale topoclimatic maps and discussed in studies of climate-risk phenomena that have cascading effects on all environmental components;
Research variables (genetic features, climatic events, durations and intensity) underlie the elaboration of climate maps to facilitate measures for diminishing destructive effects and ensuring sustainable development;
Water researches over the past decade focused on two priority directions: first, to assess water resources in various geographical regions and in small catchments, and to optimise the water circulations system within the Danube Delta area; second, to include water analyses into regional risk studies in correlation with other natural and human environmental components.

Focus:
Analyses of the geosystems’ biodiversity and dynamics in terms of structure and function with highlight on the biogeographical particularities of variously- sized territorial units;Delimitation of areas with a special biogeographical potential and the elaboration of maps of the flora and fauna;
Investigations on geographical landscape changes in relation with determinant factors. Strategies to avoid natural imbalances and protect the environment are put forward.

HUMAN GEOGRAPHY LABORATORY
Head: Prof. Dr. Claudia Popescu
GROUP OF HUMAN RESOURCES AND SETTLEMENT SYSTEMFocus:
The study of rural and urban settlements, regional and national demographic evolutions;Research projects covered the Subcarpathian area of Gorj, Brasov, Buzau and Vrancea counties, as well as North Dobrogea and the Danube Delta;
Studies on the counties of Buzau, Dambovita, Gorj, Hunedoara, Tulcea and Vrancea, were carried out, some of the results being published in specialist journals: Studii si cercetari de geografie, Revue roumaine de géographie, Revista Geografica, Buletin geografic, Gorjul geografic, Terra, etc.
Members: Dr. Daniela Nancu, Dr. Nicoleta Damian, Dr. Bianca Dumitrescu, Dr. Mihaela Persu. GROUP OF REGIONAL DEVELOPMENT AND GEOPOLITICS
Focus:
The study of regional geography and of historical and political geography, with highlight on current sustainable development chances, definition and analysis of rural development potential in critical geographical environments;The role of towns as dynamic polarising centres;
Publication of articles, book chapters, maps, etc. in scientific journals.
Members: Dr. Liliana Guran, Dr. Radu Sageatã, Dragoş Baroiu, Paul Şerban. GROUP OF PRODUCTION AND CONSUMPTION GEOGRAPHY
Focus:
The geographical study of economic activities on various space levels correlated with the demographic potential and natural environment resources;Distribution of economic activities (industrial and commercial), their dynamics and impact on the labour market and the local regional economic structure are issues tackled with the help of spatial analysis methods;
Publication of results in specialist journals at home and abroad.

CARTOGRAPHY GROUP
Head: Cristina Cristian
Focus: Thematic cartography required by various research themes;Elaboration of thematic maps which are published in geography journals and part of the Institute of Geography's works (e.g. The Geography of the Romanian Valley, The Romanian Geography – 5 volumes, National Geographical Atlas, and Historical – Geographical Atlas);
Performing final map editing, projection, and ensuring accurate and clear drawing;
Data bank for cartographic materials, created to meet thematic needs; some basic thematic maps are computer–aided processed.
